Dieser englische Künstler und Schriftsteller wurde zunächst als Porträt- und Landschaftsmaler gefeiert und erweiterte seinen Einfluss erheblich auf Kunstpädagogik, Schriftstellerei und Kuratorentätigkeit. Seine Auseinandersetzung mit der Kunstgeschichte war weitgehend autodidaktisch und förderte eine einzigartige Perspektive. Später war er als Leiter der angesehenen Slade School of Fine Art tätig und hinterließ deutliche Spuren in der Kunstwelt.
"Eindrucksvoll, unvergleichbar, preiswert" war im ID 41/88 das Fazit der Besprechung von Otto-Rudolf Rothbart. Die beiden ersten Begriffe stimmen noch immer, was aber soll man nach der Herabsetzung des Preises auf die Hälfte sagen? Billig ist das opulente Werk natürlich immer noch nicht.
