P.I. Dan Roman was used to finding missing persons and returning them home to their families. He wasn't used to finding them dead by the next morning. But Ralph Kincade had been shot four times, and Roman was left wondering whether the man's "loved ones" had loved him to death. Dan's own loved one, his new wife Susie, was off covering a South Texas flood for the TV news, so she didn't witness her husband doing what he swore he'd never do - swear in as a police deputy to help on the Kincade case. But that was only the first step in an obsessive investigation that would threaten first his marriage, then his life.
