Five Friends, 20,000 Enemy Troops, and the Secret That Could Have Changed the Course of the Cold War

On 3 October 1953, five young men crossed the border from Czechoslovakia into East Germany, armed with four pistols and a mission to deliver a secret message from a Czechoslovak general to U.S. authorities. Their journey, intended to last three days, aimed to join the U.S. Army Special Forces and return to liberate their homeland. What followed was the largest manhunt of the Cold War, as thousands of East German and Soviet troops pursued them for thirty-one days across swampland, forests, and fields. Enduring gun battles, injuries, starvation, and harsh weather, three of them ultimately reached West Berlin. Prior to their escape, they had formed an anti-Communist resistance group, inspired by the legacy of celebrated World War II leader Czech general Josef Masin, who was the father of two of the young men and the author’s grandfather. Growing up, Barbara Masin heard fragments of this story and sought to uncover the full narrative. Her investigation, drawing on eyewitness interviews and extensive archival research across four countries, contextualizes the events and explores the contemporary controversy surrounding the group's actions, raising questions about moral choices in dire circumstances. It is a gripping account of courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds, reflecting American ideals of freedom.

Kromě toho zpovídala množství očitých svědků a účastníků událostí, jejichž svědectvími doplnila osobní prožitky hlavních hrdinů.
