Hill James William Harold

    16. Mai 1964

      Monumental Soviet Mosaics 1925  – 1991

This book explores the monumental mosaics created in Moscow during the Soviet era, highlighting their significance in reflecting the entire history of Soviet art. While other Soviet cities embraced modernism in the 1960s, Moscow's mosaics were predominantly in art deco and socialist realist styles. These artworks can be found in metro stations, cultural palaces, military museums, hospitals, schools, and prefabricated houses. Unfortunately, many important mosaics are disappearing due to destruction or dismantling, with most lacking state protection and many artists remaining anonymous. Organized chronologically, the book features four sections—art deco, socialist realism, modernism, and postmodernism—showcasing and describing 140 mosaics. An appendix identifies 322 mosaics in Moscow, juxtaposing renowned works by artists like Alexander Deyneka and Boris Chernyshev with those of lesser-known creators who have been overlooked in the history of art and architecture. The inspiration for this book came from English photographer James Hill, who dedicated three years to documenting these significant yet underappreciated works of Soviet monumental art, often dismissed as mere propaganda in the post-Soviet era.
