A tak se například osamělí gaučové prohánějí argentinskou pampou, kuchařský učeň chystá pomstu v luxusní restauraci, hrdina ztraceného románu srazí ve spěchu J. L. Borgese a partyzán na útěku si vychutnává pařížský croissant. Příběhů je ještě mnoho a stejně tak rozmanitá je podoba vyprávění.
Roztříštěnost románu souvisí se skrytými úvahami o roli spisovatele a jeho vztahu ke skutečnosti, o paměti a historii a zejména o autorově vlasti v 70. a 80. letech 20. století, přičemž hlavními tématy jsou politické vraždy a válka o Falklandy.
