In der deutschen theologischen Literatur über das "Wesen des Christentums" lassen sich zwei Gruppierungen unterscheiden: die einen, die wie Romano Guardini und Ludwig Feuerbach nach der "essentia" des Christentums als dessen Zentrum fragen, die anderen, die wie Adolf von Harnack den innersten Kern des Evangeliums, die "substantia christianae fidei", jenseits der historischen Patina suchen. Mit beiden Ansätzen wird das Gespräch aufgenommen, eigentliches Ziel der Darstellung ist jedoch die Suche nach der "essentia" des Christentums in der modernen Welt. Forte knüpft somit an deutsche Theologie und Philosophie an, stellt aber die spezifische "Katholizität" der christlichen Botschaft, insbesondere die Kontinuität des Glaubens in der Zeit, in den Vordergrund.
