Christopher Nolan wurde 1965 in Irland geboren und überlebte nur knapp mit schwerer Hirnschädigung, verbannt in seine eigene stille Welt, eingeschränkt durch einen stummen, gelähmten Körper. Er besuchte in Dublin spezielle Schulen und das Trinity College. Mit 15 Jahren schrieb er sein erstes Buch, einen Gedichtband. Er benutzt zum Schreiben einen an der Stirn befestigten Stab, sein «Einhorn», mit dem er die Tasten einer Schreibmaschine anschlägt. Bereits der Erstling trug ihm großes Kritikerlob und Vergleiche mit Yeats und Joyce ein. 1987 erschienen seine Kindheitserinnerungen, die in 16 Ländern herauskamen. An seinem bisher einzigen Roman, Fünf Felder grün (Originaltitel: The Banyan Tree, 1999), arbeitete er zwölf Jahre.
