Antonín Matěj Píša (1902–1966), literární a divadelní kritik a teoretik, editor a dramaturg, vstoupil do literatury jako sedmnáctiletý talentovaný básník. Už ve svých raných statích a studiích projevoval neobyčejnou erudici a v prvních letech po 1. světové válce se stal jednou z předních osobností literární kritiky. Aby si uchoval hledisko kritické objektivnosti, zaujal v 50. a 60. letech v kulturním dění příznačnou pozici „muže v ústraní“. Výmluvným dokladem tohoto stavu je mimo jiné soubor více než 500 lektorských posudků, které psal v letech 1954 až 1965 pro nakladatelství Československý spisovatel. Z tohoto dosud nepublikovaného materiálu vychází předkládaný výbor 50 textů, který ukazuje konzistentnost Píšových literárněkritických názorů, odhaluje možná úskalí či taktizování, ale i neústupnost z uměleckých požadavků kladených na literaturu v tomto literárně i historicky exponovaném období.
