The painter, sculptor, author, filmmaker, and all-around entertainer Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) was one of the greatest exhibitionists and eccentrics of the 20th century. He was among the first to apply the insights of Freudian psychoanalysis to art and is celebrated primarily for his surrealist works. Iconic images such as the melting clocks and the lobster telephone have become symbols of surrealism and modernity. Dalí often referred to his paintings as "hand-painted dream photographs." Geburtstag im Mai 2004 gefeiert wurde, war ein Meister der Selbstinszenierung, der es verstand, ein Millionenpublikum nach der Droge Dali süchtig zu machen. Unerschöpflich in seiner Phantasie, die Picasso mit einem ständig auf Hochtouren laufenden Außenbordmotor verglich, hielt er Kunstmarkt und Öffentlichkeit gleichermaßen in Atem - als begnadeter Selbstdarsteller, medienwirksamer Exzentriker und, was angesichts seiner spektakulären Auftritte beinahe in den Hintergrund zu treten drohte, als Künstler. Aber Dali war noch mehr. In seiner mit 37 Jahren verfaßten Autobiographie The Secret Life of Salvador Dali, die er, der Katalane, auf französisch niederschrieb, ins Englische transkribieren ließ und 1942, als in Europa der Zweite Weltkrieg tobte, in New York veröffentlichte, erweist er sich auch als ein Meister des geschriebenen Wortes und der literarischen Fiktion.
