Historická hra, jejíž děj se odehrává ve středověku, je časově vymezena lety 1199-1216. To je období vlády anglického krále Jana I. (Bezzemka), bratra legendárního panovníka Richarda I. zvaného Lví srdce. Během svého panování se Jan dostal do konfliktu s Filipem II. Augustem a v neúspěšné válce za spojenectví s císařem Ottou IV. ztratil většinu anglických držav ve Francii.
