Thailand is often called the ?Land of Smiles?, a nickname which sounds at once pleasant and mysterious. It is said that the Thais have a smile for every emotion, and with so many nuances of smiling, the smile often hides more than it reveals. Inside Thai Society looks behind smiles and appearances in order to discover those regularities and expectations that pervade everyday life. It identifies the basic ideas that give meaning and order to existence and that make life in Thai society eminently reasonable.

This unusual study discloses the public discourse among educated, urban Southeast Asians in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and considers how these people conceive of their society and its problems and process. It examines basic patterns of thought, the interpretation of observed behavior, the opinions of public intellectuals, and the dianoses of novelists. Together these provide the basis for evaluating whether or not an activist civil society can develop. Because of the muddled situation prevailing in the countries under scrutiny, the emergence of a public committed to seems to be a necessary condition for strengthening the society and civilizing the state. Will it happen?

The Soeharto presidency projected itself as a cultural order justified in the name of "tradition." This regime aspired to build a Pancasila state filled with a fully cultured Indonesian person and rich in investments in value education. To understand what happened, we must delve into the background of Javanese thought regarding all of this, and therefore the aim of this book is to juxtapose Javanese mystical thought patterns with the thought patterns that seemingly support the engineering of nation building in Indonesia.
