Spitfire VIII miał być wersją Mk VII przeznaczoną do działań na średniej wysokości, bez kabiny ciśnieniowej, ale z pozostałymi udoskonaleniami. Aby jednak wyprodukować te wersje trzeba było wprowadzić zmiany w oprzyrządowaniu. W pierwszych miesiącach 1942 r. niezbędne stało się jak najszybsze wprowadzenie Spitfire'a z silnikiem Merlin 61 do dywizjonów bojowych przy zastosowaniu absolutnego minimum zmian. W tym celu parę Mk VC wysłano do zakładów Rolls-Royce w Hucknall, gdzie - po wzmocnieniu podłużnic kadłuba, aby mogły unieść cięższy i mocniejszy silnik - zainstalowano na nich Merliny 61. Ta nowa kombinacja została nazwana Spitfire IX. Ministerstwo Produkcji Lotniczej złożyło zamówienie na wersję Mk IX (produkowane od podstaw oraz przerabiane z Mk V) dopóki nie będzie gotowy do produkcji wzmocniony płatowiec Mk VIII.
