Kakuzo Okakura wurde 1862 als Sohn einer wohlhabenden Samurai-Familie in Yokohama geboren. Nach Abschluss der kaiserlichen Universität in Tokio engagierte er sich für die Erhaltung japanischer Kultur. Er starb im Jahre 1913.
