Nous sommes en 1937, à Amsterdam, où se sont réfugiés les Tabor, une famille de Juifs berlinois, après l'arrivée des nazis au pouvoir. Léo et Julia vivent avec leur jeune fils Zacharie dans un petit meublé. Ils sont juristes et cherchent du travail comme tous les exilés. Léo est un idéaliste, profondément marqué par la guerre des tranchées qu'il a vécue au Chemin des Dames. Ses sympathies vont aux socialistes et aux anarchistes. Julia est une jeune femme lumineuse, amoureuse et combative. Peu à peu, les signes de l'intolérance et du fanatisme gagnent la ville refuge et le pire est peut-être à venir. En ces temps troublés de persécutions et d'arrestations arbitraires, l'obstination des Tabor à maintenir « l'inaltérable bonheur d'exister » est un des enchantements de ce livre. Ni les humiliations ni les trahisons ne semblent atteindre ce couple magnifique épris de liberté et de justice.

Sur le thème du chasseur chassé, ce roman flirte avec le polar : rapports équivoques, atmosphères lourdes, liaisons fatales, le récit semble se nourrir de l'ombre.

Sacher rencontre Clara et leur histoire donne l'impression d'être suspendue entre rêve et réalité. Sur fond de temporalité distendue, de géographie incertaine, E. Moses élabore un récit proche de Buzzati et de Perutz, où l'étrange le dispute au fantastique, mais aussi de Zweig, pour la destinée.
