Miguel de Unamuno zieht alle Register des Figurenspiels mit seinem unglücklichen Helden Augusto Pérez. Der eines Tages nach alter Gewohnheit auf die Straße tritt und sich sofort und unsterblich verliebt. In Eugenia, eine Klavierlehrerin wider Willen, die wiederum den nichtsnutzigen Neffen der Portiersfrau ihres Hauses liebt. Augusto macht die Erfahrung, daß man, wenn man liebt, die Liebe überall findet, so auch bei seiner Wäscherin Rosario. In seiner Verwirrung spricht er mit allen und jedem über seine Probleme, und sein Autor leistet ihm tatkräftige Hilfe: Dadurch gelingt es ihm, den vom Balkon gestürzten Vogelkäfig (samt Inhalt) der Tante seiner Angebeteten zu fangen, als er scheinbar zufällig, aber in Wirklichkeit vom Marionettenfaden seines Autors gezogen, an ihrem Haus vorbeikommt. Er verschafft sich damit ein bejubeltes Entrée in die Familie. Nach vielen äußerst komischen Verwicklungen und langen Gesprächen, an deren Ende Augustos Hochzeitspläne krachend gescheitert sind, wendet sich der Verzweifelte an Miguel de Unamuno, seinen Autor. Dieser versucht ihm klarzumachen, daß es mit seiner Selbständigkeit nicht allzuweit her ist, doch will Augusto nichts davon hören. Schließlich bleibt ihm als Gesprächspartner nur noch sein kleiner Hund Orpheus, der zuletzt gar die Grabrede auf ihn halten muß.
