W sierpniu 1979 roku 303 jachty wystartowały do regat Fastnet na trasie: Wyspa Wight Skała Fastnet Wyspa Wight. Piękna pogoda towarzysząca startowi zmieniła się błyskawicznie w prawdziwe piekło. Sztorm o sile huraganu przemierzył Atlantyk z prękością, która zaskoczyła synoptyków i uderzył we flotyllę jachtów z niespotykaną furią. Przez dwadzieścia godzin 2500 żeglarek i żeglarzy przygniatanych falami o wysokości bloku mieszkalnego walczyło o życie, a helikoptery i łodzie służb ratunkowych starały się nieść pomoc potrzebującym.
