Dieses Pionierwerk der Bibelwissenschaft erhellt den jüdischen Hintergrund der neutestamentlichen Schriften und hat damit zwischen den Weltkriegen eine neue Basis für das Verständnis des Neuen Testaments geschaffen. Ziel ist es, "den gesamten der Erläuterung des Neuen Testaments dienlichen Stoff aus der altjüdischen Literatur zu sammeln, zu sichten und in zuverlässiger Übersetzung bequem zugänglich zu machen" (Einleitung). Das Material wird in der Reihenfolge des Neuen Testaments präsentiert; synoptische Parallelen werden bei ihrem ersten Vorkommen im Matthäusevangelium kommentiert, dem dadurch der bei Weitem größte Umfang gewidmet ist. Das mehrbändige Werk entstand in den 1920er-Jahren und konzentriert sich auf Vergleichsstellen aus Talmud und Midrasch. Trotz dieser Einschränkung gilt die Quellensammlung bis heute international als eine einzigartige Fundgrube, die wohl auch in den nächsten Jahrzehnten durch kein vergleichbares Nachschlagewerk ersetzt werden wird.
