In this text, the Native people of southwestern Alaska share the traditional stories that form the expressive core of their culture with a young German scholar. The stories were recorded and compiled in the 1930s in communities on Nunivak Island and the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
Text of observations on Yupik Eskimo arts made in the Kuskokwim are in the mid-1930s, including description of ceremonies, carving of masks, drum and kayak painting, story knives (drawing on the ground while story telling), carving of wooden bowls and string games.
