»Die schwedische Gräfin von G***« war ein europäischer Erfolg. Gellert fasst darin seine Philosophie vernünftiger Liebe in Romanform und wählt erstmals die Perspektive einer weiblichen Ich-Erzählerin. Die Hauptfiguren haben schwere Bewährungsproben ihrer Tugend zu bestehen – etwa durch voreheliche Mesalliance und unwissentliche Doppelheirat, Inzest und Suizid –, meistern diese Klippen aber durch Großmut und Vergebung. Die Edition folgt der Erstausgabe (1747/48) und gibt Materialien, ausführliche Kommentare und Hinweise zur Forschung an die Hand.

Gellerts 1749 uraufgeführtes Theaterstück ist ein Musterbeispiel für die deutsche Rührkomödie der Aufklärungszeit: Weil Julchen dem reichen Damis aus Freiheitsliebe das Jawort nicht geben mag, spinnt ihre selbstlose, tugendhafte Schwester Lottchen eine Intrige, um die beiden doch noch zu vereinen. Dass ihr eigener Liebhaber Siegmund sich dagegen als wenig tugendhaft erweist, will sie zunächst nicht wahrhaben. Mit Material zur Rührkomödie im Anhang und einem Nachwort.
