In seinen in Briefform überlieferten Reiseberichten Mundus Novus und Vier Seefahrten, die zu seinen Lebzeiten nie angezweifelt worden sind, betont er dies immer wieder – bis der Kartograph Martin Waldseemüller zusammen mit dem Humanisten Matthias Ringmann 1507 eine Weltkarte veröffentlicht, die den neuen Kontinent erstmals aufnimmt und mit dem Namen versieht: »America«.
