Rose Wylie has long been considered of the highest-profile artists in British contemporary painting, even though-it's hard to believe-she achieved her international breakthrough just before her eightieth birthday. Out of a broad repertoire of motifs from pop culture, newspaper reports, and everyday life, the artist distills succinct scenes that humorously, yet critically comment upon current events. In the process Wylie impressively demonstrates how lighthearted and natural painting today can be. Her large paintings are touching, with their rare sense of ease and playful naivete. And suddenly, surprisingly, the traditional themes of art history descend from their pedestals and meet us at eye level. ROSE WYLIE (*1934, Kent) studied painting at the Folkestone School of Art, Kent, and at the Royal College of Art, London. Her works can be found in prominent collections, such as the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.; Space K, Seoul; and Tate, London. Her exhibitions include one at the Tate in 2013 and another at the Serpentine Gallery in 2017. Wylie's show at the Museum Langmatt marks the first time her work will be seen in Switzerland. Inside the charming home of one of the world's great private collections of impressionism The Museum Langmatt in Baden, Switzerland, is a gem in every respect. The house and garden take visitors back to the turn of the 20th century, when Jenny and Sidney W. Brown set up house there. As collectors, the couple was well informed and well connected, and they assembled noteworthy, mainly impressionist works of art, chiefly on their trips to Paris. The Browns acquired paintings by Renoir, Monet, Gauguin, Cézanne and Degas--numerous small works that were displayed in the rooms. The Museum Langmatt, which opened in 1990, is founded upon this unique core collection. The Browns' living area became an influential exhibition space for contemporary art. This carefully designed illustrated volume has been compiled to celebrate the museum's 30th anniversary. It provides a look at the magical art collection, its special history, and a glimpse behind the scenes, as well.

Das Bedürfnis nach Selbstdarstellung und -repräsentation in Bildern ist keine Erfindung unserer Zeit: Schon in der Porträtmalerei des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts war die Idealisierung des Porträtierten eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Dieser Konvention werden in der Ausstellung zeitgenössische Porträts gegenübergestellt, die nicht nur die Aktualität des Genres belegen – im Vergleich offenbaren sie sich auch als Spiegelbilder gesellschaftlicher Verwerfungen: Sie zeigen Einsamkeit, Zerrüttung, physische und psychische Gewalt. Die Ausstellung im Museum Langmatt stellt die verschiedenen Epochen einander gegenüber und forscht nach den Konventionen heutiger Selbstdarstellung. Porträts von Künstlern wie Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Edgar Degas und Pierre-Auguste Renoir treten in einen Dialog mit international renommierten zeitgenössischen Künstlern wie Michaël Borremans, Marlene Dumas und Luc Tuymans.
