KlappentextDie Mathematiker Adrien-Marie Legendre (1752-1833) und Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi (1804-1851) haben von August 1827 bis Juni 1832 einen Briefwechsel geführt, der nach Inhalt und Umfang zu den bemerkenswertesten, bedeutendsten und interessantesten mathematischen Korrespondenzen der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts gehört. Mathematischer Hintergrund ist der berühmte Wettstreit zwischen Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829) und Jacobi um den Ausbau der von ihnen eingeleiteten Theorie der elliptischen Funktionen. Die in französischer Sprache geschriebenen Briefe werden hier erstmals zweisprachig ediert: sowohl in der Originalsprache als auch in einer für diese Edition angefertigten deutschen Übersetzung. - Die Kommentierung der Briefe aus heutiger Sicht erfolgt sowohl in Fußnoten als auch in einem neuverfaßten Anhang. Außerdem enthält der Band - anläßlich des Internationalen Mathematikerkongresses in Berlin - einen Essay über Jacobis Leben und Wirken in dieser Stadt.
