Focusing on the Pearl River Delta, the book explores the challenges faced by firms transitioning from low-tier suppliers for transnational corporations to more competitive positions. It highlights the role of strategic coupling and relational economic geography in industrial upgrading. While some firms have benefited from indigenous innovation and state support, the majority continue to struggle in the wake of two decades of economic transformation since China's reforms in the 1980s.
