Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction

Focusing on the unique genre of tanci, or "plucking rhymes," this study explores how upper-class educated women in early modern China expressed their views on gender, nation, and political activism through their narratives. It examines the evolution of these representations before and after the Taiping Rebellion, highlighting themes of warfare and social unrest. The book provides valuable insights into the cultural and historical context of women's voices in literature during a transformative period in Chinese history.
