Anna Jamison, a runaway slave, escapes to Willingham, Pennsylvania, seeking freedom while evading the notorious Railroad Men, professional slave catchers. The mission becomes even more perilous when she decides to return to the plantation to rescue her siblings, embarking on a dangerous journey north. Meanwhile, the James kids—Rob, Claire, and Benji—along with their dog Lucy, visit Willingham for the grand opening of a new library built on an abolitionist's former home. After a tour, they discover an old wooden door leading to the basement, which serves as a portal to the past. Suddenly, the kids find themselves in an eerie forest in 1864, where they encounter Anna and her companions, Jupiter, Joy, Caleb, and Jenny. Together, they face extreme weather, hunger, thirst, slave catchers, a civil war battle, and revenge-seeking Beau Jamison. Their journey culminates in a triumphant crossing of the Freedom Bridge, symbolizing their hard-won escape to freedom.
