Locked in his dark cell, Greg lay awake, fidgeting with a cassette recorder, listening to its mechanical sounds. He knew no one would come looking for him—living in a pickup truck and having traveled to a secret location without telling anyone. Drawn by rumors of an abandoned building linked to a black site, he found himself in a precarious situation. Truckers and drifters circulated tales about the place, some exaggerating the sinister aspects and methods of enhanced interrogation, while others dismissed the stories as mere hyperbole. Despite the questionable lead, it was too enticing for an amateur journalist like Greg to ignore. He did not anticipate that the rumors held some truth, leading to his mistaken identity and incarceration in the building. As he paused the recorder, he heard rustling and soft thumps from the ceiling vent. Unidentified noises often stop when one listens closely, but the building's quirks—the small bumps and clanks—intensified the eerie atmosphere at night. These sounds, though mostly benign, fueled the imagination of a sleepless newcomer. This psychological horror story pays homage to gothic fiction.
