Fifteen years ago, research on generalized quantifiers was primarily a mathematical logic field dominated by mathematicians. Recently, an increasing number of linguists and philosophers have recognized the significance of general quantifiers in natural language, as evidenced by the extensive bibliography compiled for this volume. This shift in focus has largely been inspired by Jon Barwise and Robin Cooper's influential 1981 article "Generalized Quantifiers and Natural Language." A notable milestone in this development was the workshop held at Lund University from May 9-11, 1985, organized by Robin Cooper, Elisabet Engdahl, and the editor of this volume. Most of the papers included here stem from that workshop, with Jon Barwise's contribution differing from his original presentation. Mats Rooth's article was also added due to its relevance to the other works. The articles have been revised for publication, and authors have engaged with each other's contributions to create a cohesive collection.
