Once upon a time, a large black American bear found a novel manuscript under a tree. Unable to eat it, he stole and read it. Liking it, he borrowed a suit, named himself "Hal Jam" after his favorite jam, and went to New York to seek his fortune in publishing. Kotzwinkle crafted a satirical fairy tale for adults.
