Nekonvenční hrdina je pronásledován představiteli diktátorského režimu Zoocrata Zachariera, jenž si násilím podmanil jeden z ostrovů v Karibiku. Obyvatelé ostrova jsou vystaveni potupné masové převýchově, takzvané elektrifikaci duší, které se hrdina zuřivě brání. Jeho ojedinělé gesto vzpoury vrcholí účastí v nebezpečné soutěži, v níž vítěze čeká velká odměna, ale i stejně velké riziko. Hrdinova vzpoura je v závěru knihy krutě potrestána.
