Briskin wird von seinem Job suspendiert, als er sich weigert, einen besonders abstoßenden Werbespot zu lesen. Art gerät in eine absurde Gruppe von Möchtegern-Revolutionären. Der Roman behandelt vor allem die sich verändernden Beziehungen zwischen Jim und Pat sowie Art und Rachael, die in ein Netz von Verwicklungen geraten und versuchen, mehr oder weniger glücklich zu leben, wenn auch nicht für immer, dann doch für eine Weile. Mit seinen scharfsinnig beobachteten Charakteren und sympathischer schwarzer Komödie ist "Die kaputte Kugel" ein weiteres äußerst unterhaltsames Werk.

Im Washington, D.C. des Jahres 2080 ist die Überwachungstechnik so weit fortgeschritten, daß Verbrechen schon aufgespürt werden können, bevor sie begangen worden sind.
