Die 1916 in New York erschienene Studie „The Photoplay“ (Das Lichtspiel) gilt weltweit als erste größere Untersuchung zur Psychologie und Ästhetik des Films aus der Feder eines kinobegeisterten Wissenschaftlers. Ihr Autor war der Harvard-Professor Hugo Münsterberg, Mitbegründer der angewandten Psychologie in den USA. Der Ausgangspunkt seiner konstruktivistischen Filmtheorie beim Dispositiv der Wahrnehmung, die Verkopplung filmischer und mentaler Funktionen, die Nähe zu Denkweisen der frühen Gestaltpsychologie und der Brückenschlag zwischen „Ästhetik der Isolierung“, all das lässt „Das Lichtspiel“ nicht nur im Kontext zeitgenössischer Filmkunst interessant erscheinen, es fordert auch Lektüre als „Vortext“ zahlreicher späterer medientheoretischer Konzepte heraus. Die hierzulande fast vergessene „revolutionäre Theorie“ (Friedrich Kittler) gilt in den USA längst als Klassiker.
