America has isolated itself from the outside world, and within the country, distrust reigns. In this atmosphere of hostility, a foreign agent desperately searches for a mutant who alone can decipher a mysterious message from alien beings that speaks of humanity's doom. Communication with the aliens seems impossible for ordinary people, as technical means prove ineffective: the aliens come from "the wrong end of time."
