On Christmas Eve in 1812, seven-year-old orphan Pip encounters an escaped convict in the churchyard while visiting his family's graves. Living with his abusive sister and kind-hearted brother-in-law Joe Gargery, a blacksmith, Pip is coerced into stealing food and a file for the convict. On Christmas morning, he returns with the stolen items, but soldiers arrive to recapture the convict, who confesses to stealing from Joe's smithy. Years later, Miss Havisham, a wealthy recluse in her decaying Satis House, asks Mr. Pumblechook to find a boy to visit her. Pip falls for her adopted daughter Estella, who is cold and disdainful towards him, a behavior encouraged by Miss Havisham. As Pip matures, he is apprenticed to Joe, but tensions arise with Joe's envious assistant, Dolge Orlick. When Mrs. Joe is brutally attacked, Orlick is suspected, and after the incident, she becomes unexpectedly kind. Biddy, a former schoolmate, joins the household to help care for her. In a parallel tale set in 1775, John Willet and his friends at the Maypole Inn recount the murder of Reuben Haredale, whose estate is now owned by his brother Geoffrey and niece Emma. Joe Willet leaves home to join the army after a dispute with his father. Meanwhile, Edward Chester loves Emma, but their union is opposed by their feuding families.
