The collection "The Blue and Brown Books" explores significant themes of Wittgenstein's later philosophy: the relationship between use and meaning, the problem of understanding and mastering a particular technique, the question of rules, language games, and "forms of life," as well as the challenge to the possibility of a private language. The so-called Blue Book is a record of Wittgenstein's lectures at Cambridge from 1933 to 1934. During 1934-35, he dictated the Brown Book, initially intended for a select group of friends and students. The texts were not originally meant for publication but gradually circulated among his students. Wittgenstein attempted to prepare the Brown Book for publication but ultimately ceased work on it to focus on his later work, "Philosophical Investigations."
