Jack Vance concludes his brilliant science fiction trilogy set in the unique region of space known as Mircea's Wisp. The narrative centers on the Planet Cadwal, a natural preserve established a millennium ago, where human presence has been strictly limited to a select group of scientists and their families. Over time, however, exceptions were made, leading to an increase in population as some chose to remain and others were brought in as "temporary" employees. This growth has sparked a conspiracy among humans and aliens aiming to seize control of Cadwal and exploit its resources. Although Glawen Clattuc and Wayness Tamm have introduced a new Charter for the Conservancy, it has failed to resolve tensions on the planet. Instead, it has intensified divisions, with one faction led by Namour and Smonny exploiting the vulnerable Yips, while another seeks to restore Cadwal to its original state without regard for human life. Caught in this turmoil, Commander Glawen Clattuc is tasked with capturing Namour, all while pursuing his own agenda: finding the Yips he believes murdered his mother two decades ago.
