In the drought-stricken town of Peaches, California, fourteen-year-old Lacey May and her alcoholic mother face an environmental crisis that has transformed their once-thriving community into a barren wasteland. In their desperation, residents turn to Pastor Vern, a cult leader promising rain through secret “assignments.” Lacey has faith in him until her mother abandons her, fleeing with a stranger after being exiled for her sins. Left distraught, Lacey moves in with her indifferent grandmother, Cherry, who is more invested in her taxidermy mice than in Lacey’s well-being. As Lacey navigates the disturbing actions of men who impose their will on her and uncovers Pastor Vern’s shocking plans to restore fertility to the land, she embarks on a quest to find her mother. Guided only by romance novels and the women who knew her mother, Lacey seeks her own path through unimaginable challenges. This debut novel weaves grit, humor, and heart into a powerful narrative about female friendship, resilience, and the search for salvation in unexpected places. It offers a haunting exploration of the complex relationship between religion and sexuality, depicting how vulnerable women can be exploited and the profound consequences that follow.
