Part love story, part murder mystery, this sharp-witted novel set on the brink of the Second World War raises provocative questions about class, politics, art, love, and madness, exploring the consequences when two powerful personalities defy the rules. Vanessa Cole, a stunning 29-year-old heiress linked to numerous wealthy men, faces a turning point at her parents' remote Adirondack home, The Reserve. Two pivotal events unfold: her father dies unexpectedly from a heart attack, and a captivating local artist, Jordan Groves, lands his biplane in the restricted Upper Lake. Known for his exploits as much as his art, Jordan's leftist leanings seem at odds with his affluent lifestyle. Despite his confidence, he is captivated by Vanessa's beauty and charm, while she is drawn to his rebellious spirit. However, Jordan soon uncovers Vanessa's dark family secret. Emotionally fragile and further destabilized by her father's death, Vanessa spirals out of control, manipulating and damaging those around her. This incisive and passionately romantic novel of suspense adds a new dimension to the author's acclaimed repertoire.
