Adhortacja ukazała się dwa lata po Synodzie Biskupów, którego tematem przewodnim było Słowo Boże w życiu i misji Kościoła. Papież podkreśla, że Bóg mówi nie tylko przez Biblię, ale przede wszystkim przez Swego Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa, a także przez innych ludzi, Magisterium Kościoła, Tradycję. Część pierwsza dokumentu poświęcona jest naturze słowa Bożego, a dwie następne precyzują znaczenie słowa Bożego w relacji do Kościoła i świata.

In this Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, the Pope sums up the important work done by the Synod of Bishops on the Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church. The document has three major parts:

Pope Benedict XVI's second encyclical,  Saved In Hope , ("Spe Salvi" in Latin) takes its title from St. Paul, who wrote, "In hope we have been saved". In this special deluxe hardcover edition of the work, the Holy Father continues a line of thought he began with his first encyclical, God is Love . Love and Hope are closely related in the spiritual life. Love of God involves hope or trust in God. According to the  Catechism of the Catholic Church , "The virtue of hope responds to the aspiration to happiness which God has placed in the heart of every man". Hope enables us to look to the next life, but it also inspires and purifies our actions in this life. Pope Benedict considers modern philosophies and the challenges of faith today in light of the virtue of hope. "Confronted by today's changing and complex panorama, the virtue of hope is subject to harsh trials in the community of believers. For this very reason, we must be apostles who are filled with hope and joyful trust in God's promises. In contemporary society, which shows such visible signs of secularism, we must not give in to despair." — Pope Benedict XVI

Po 18 latach od ukazania się encykliki Jana Pawła II Centesimus annus z 1991 r. papież Benedykt XVI opublikował swą trzecią - a pierwszą społeczną - encyklikę poświęconą aktualnym problemom współczesności. Ukazuje się ona, podobnie jak poprzednie encykliki społeczne, w ważnej dla dzisiejszego świata chwili, w czasie groźnego dla jego przyszłości kryzysu, nie tylko, - co wydaje się, iż nie wszyscy dostrzegają - ekonomicznego, ale także kulturowego i moralnego. Ojciec św. mówi o rozwoju ludzkim "w miłości i prawdzie", czyli w relacji bezinteresownego otwarcia na potrzeby innych. Tak miłość, jak prawda są najlepszą drogą do pokonywania trudności na drodze życia.

Dokument vznikl na základě jednání biskupské synody v Římě v říjnu 2008. První část textu se mj. zabývá výrokem, že křesťanství je náboženstvím knihy. V srdci církve ovšem neleží vytištěná kniha, ale živé Slovo, vtělený Boží Syn Ježíš Kristus. Papež podrobně probírá studium a výklad Bible v církvi a v rámci živé tradice. V druhé části dokumentu se zaobírá biblickou pastorací, místem, jež má Boží slovo v liturgii a v životě církve. Podrobněji zpracovává téma homilie a zdůrazňuje potřebnost její přípravy od kazatele. V třetí části se papež obrací na všechny věřící a zdůrazňuje misijní poslání církve: hlásat Boží slovo v současném světě. Exhortace se inspiruje spisy apoštola Jana, především prologem k jeho evangeliu. Z církevních dokumentů hojně cituje konstituci Druhého vatikánského koncilu o Božím zjevení Dei Verbum. Dokument využívá i zásadních přínosů Papežské biblické komise, vědeckého grémia Svatého stolce, jehož činnost zaštiťoval dlouhá léta právě Joseph Ratzinger. Verbum Domini konečně vybízí k osobní i společné modlitbě nad Božím slovem. Není lepší cesty, jak hlouběji poznat Krista, než pozorná „posvátná četba“ Písma.

Die Enzyklika Deus caritas est richtet sich an Bischöfe, Priester, Diakone, geweihte Personen und alle Gläubigen und behandelt die christliche Liebe. Joseph Ratzinger, einer der bedeutendsten zeitgenössischen Theologen, greift das Thema aus dem ersten Johannesbrief auf: Gott ist Liebe. Die Enzyklika gliedert sich in zwei Teile. Im ersten Teil analysiert der Papst den Begriff der Liebe philosophisch, philologisch und theologisch und untersucht verschiedene Formen menschlicher Liebe, beginnend mit dem altgriechischen eros, der insbesondere die körperliche Liebe beschreibt. Er erhebt seine Überlegungen zur übernatürlichen Liebe zwischen Gott und Mensch. Der zweite Teil betont, dass die Kirche das Gebot der Liebe, das sie von Jesus Christus erhalten hat, umsetzen muss. Dies geschieht durch karitative Tätigkeiten, die bereits in den ersten Jahrhunderten in Form von Diakonia, einem Dienst zur Unterstützung Bedürftiger, begonnen wurden. Nach der Aufzeigung von Missverständnissen über die karitative Arbeit der Kirche im Laufe der Geschichte verweist der Papst auf die lange Tradition der Soziallehre der Kirche und erläutert, was diese Arbeit wirklich sein sollte. Die Enzyklika schließt mit einem Aufruf zum Gebet, das die karitative Arbeit inspirieren und nähren soll.
