This prequel to "A Fire Upon The Deep" follows Pham Nuwen, part of the Queng Ho interstellar trading fleet. As the Queng Ho and the Emergents orbit the dormant planet Arachna, the planet is on the brink of awakening to technology, while the Emergents have sinister intentions.
