Old Uddingston

Uddingston is the town of my birth, and this is the follow-up to my own long out of print Bygone Uddingston (Richard Stenlake, 1988). The new book features different material including some photographs taken by myself in the early 1970s of buildings and streets which were obviously about to disappear - such as Old Mill Road, Muiredge Street and Lizzie's sweetie shop. The older material includes the old town, Main Street and the Cross, Clydeneuk House, Crofthead Street, Loancroft poultry farm and Watson Street. Also included are the bowling green, the cricket club (I found this photograph on waste ground many years ago), Tunnock's extension being built and the old gasworks. Other locations featured are Tannochside, Thorniewood, the old Daldowie House, Calderpark House, the village of Broomhouse and last but not least Calderpark Zoo, to which my siblings and I were despatched every school holiday (just for the morning or afternoon!).
