Kromě studií a výjimečných cest prakticky neopouštěla rodné město a později v životě přestala vycházet z rodinného domu i svého pokoje. S přáteli udržovala kontakt téměř výhradně skrze korespondenci a díky své zálibě v nošení pouze bílých šatů a neochotě vytvářet společenské vazby si ve městě získala pověst výstředního blázna. Její introvertní povaha ji však vedla ke psaní poezie a její dílo - z drtivé většiny nalezené až po autorčině smrti - čítá téměř 1800 básní. Pouze minimum z nich bylo publikováno za jejího života, a to vždy upravené vydavatelem, aby se text přiblížil dobovým poetickým normám. V nezměněné podobě začalo její dílo vycházet až ve 20. století, kdy se jí také s nástupem modernistické poezie začalo díky jejímu netradičnímu stylu dostávat zaslouženého uznání.
