    Cognitive behavioural systems
Towards Autonomous, Adaptive, and Context-Aware Multimodal Interfaces: Theoretical and Practical Issues
Verbal and nonverbal features of human human and human machine interaction
    Verbal and nonverbal communication behaviours
Multimodal signals: cognitive and algorithmic issues
Development of multimodal interfaces: active listening and synchrony ; revised selected papers
    • The themes of the papers presented in this book emphasize theoretical and practical issues for modelling human-machine interaction, ranging from the attempt in describing “the spacing and orientation in co-present interaction” to the effort for developing multimodal interfaces, collecting and analysing interaction data and emergent behaviour as well as analysing the use of nonverbal and pragmatic elements of exchanges, implementing discourse control and virtual agents and using active listening in computer speech processing.

Development of multimodal interfaces: active listening and synchrony ; revised selected papers
    • This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the COST Action 2102 and euCognition supported international school on Multimodal Signals: 'Cognitive and Algorithmic Issues' held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, in April 2008. The 34 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from participants’ contributions and invited lectures given at the workshop. The volume is organized in two parts; the first on Interactive and Unsupervised Multimodal Systems contains 14 papers. The papers deal with the theoretical and computational issue of defining algorithms, programming languages, and determinist models to recognize and synthesize multimodal signals. These are facial and vocal expressions of emotions, tones of voice, gestures, eye contact, spatial arrangements, patterns of touch, expressive movements, writing patterns, and cultural differences, in anticipation of the implementation of intelligent avatars and interactive dialogue systems that could be exploited to improve user access to future telecommunication services. The second part of the volume, on Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Signals, presents 20 original studies devoted to the modeling of timing synchronisation between speech production, gestures, facial and head movements in human communicative expressions and on their mutual contribution for an effective communication.

Multimodal signals: cognitive and algorithmic issues
    • This volume compiles invited papers and selected contributions from the COST 2102 International Workshop on “Verbal and Nonverbal Communication Behaviours,” held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, from March 29–31, 2007. Organized by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Psychology of the Second University of Naples, along with the International Institute for Advanced Scientific Studies “Eduardo R. Caianiello” (IIASS), the workshop focused on the fundamentals of verbal and nonverbal communication features and their connections to personal identification, socio-cultural backgrounds, and individual traits. Sponsored by the COST Action 2102 in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the organizing institutions, the event gathered diverse research communities from psychology and computational sciences. These groups have sought to characterize human behavior in face-to-face communication through various features, exploring relationships among facial expressions, prosodic voice quality, communication modes, cultural differences, and individual variations. The discussions also addressed stable personality traits, degrees of expressiveness, and the identification of interlocutors' emotional and psychological states, contributing to a deeper understanding of communication dynamics.

    • Towards Autonomous, Adaptive, and Context-Aware Multimodal Interfaces: Theoretical and Practical Issues

Third COST 2102 International Training School, Caserta, Italy, March 15-19, 2010, Revised Selected Papers

This volume brings together the advanced research results obtained by the European COST Action 2102: "Cross Modal Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication". The research published in this book was discussed at the 3rd jointly EUCOGII-COST 2102 International Training School entitled "Toward Autonomous, Adaptive, and Context-Aware Multimodal Interfaces: Theoretical and Practical Issues ", held in Caserta, Italy, on March 15-19, 2010. The book is arranged into two scientific sections. The 18 revised papers of the first section, "Human-Computer Interaction: Cognitive and Computational Issues", deal with conjectural and processing issues of defining models, algorithms, and strategies for implementing cognitive behavioural systems. The second section, "Synchrony through Verbal and Nonverbal Signals", presents 21 revised lectures that provide theoretical and practical solutions to the modelling of timing synchronization between linguistic and paralinguistic expressions, actions, body movements, activities in human interaction and on their assistance for an effective communication.

This book constitutes refereed proceedings of the COST 2102 International Training School on Cognitive Behavioural Systems held in Dresden, Germany, in February 2011. The 39 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from various submissions. The volume presents new and original research results in the field of human-machine interaction inspired by cognitive behavioural human-human interaction features. The themes covered are on cognitive and computational social information processing, emotional and social believable Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) systems, behavioural and contextual analysis of interaction, embodiment, perception, linguistics, semantics and sentiment analysis in dialogues and interactions, algorithmic and computational issues for the automatic recognition and synthesis of emotional states.

    • This volume brings together the advanced research results obtained by the European COST Action 2102 „Cross Modal Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication“, primarily discussed at the PINK SSPnet-COST2102 International Conference on Analysis of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication and Enactment: The Processing Issues, held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2010. The 40 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The volume is arranged into two scientific sections. The first section, Multimodal Signals: Analysis, Processing and Computational Issues, deals with conjectural and processing issues of defining models, algorithms, and heuristic strategies for data analysis, coordination of the data flow and optimal encoding of multi-channel verbal and nonverbal features. The second section, Verbal and Nonverbal Social Signals, presents original studies that provide theoretical and practical solutions to the modelling of timing synchronization between linguistic and paralinguistic expressions, actions, body movements, activities in human interaction and on their assistance for an effective human-machine interactions.
