      Der vorliegende Band enthält Auszüge aus den Jugenderinnerungen des Leipziger Indogermanisten Karl Brugmann (1849–1919), einer der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten in der Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft. Als Schüler von Georg Curtius und unter dem Einfluss von August Leskien wurde Brugmann zu einem führenden Vertreter der Junggrammatiker. 1876 bewies er, dass die indogermanische Grundsprache auch silbische Nasale *m?, *n? besaß, was die von den Junggrammatikern vertretene Ausnahmslosigkeit der Lautgesetze untermauerte und zu Auseinandersetzungen mit Curtius führte. Brugmanns Text beschreibt sein Leben bis zu seiner Litauen-Reise im Herbst 1880 und beleuchtet die kritische Phase der Sprachwissenschaft um 1876 sowie die persönlichen Beziehungen der damaligen Protagonisten an der Leipziger Universität. Dies ermöglicht ein authentischeres Bild von Brugmann und eine ausgewogenere Beurteilung der Entwicklung der Sprachwissenschaft. Zudem sind Auszüge aus Brugmanns Familienchronik enthalten, die zwei längere Auslandsreisen und eine Berufungsanfrage nach Baltimore betreffen. Die im Text erwähnten Fakten und Personen werden in Anmerkungen ausführlich kommentiert. Ein einführender Essay mit dem Titel "Der 'Junggrammatiker' Karl Brugmann" rundet den Band ab.
