This book approaches the topic of intercultural understanding in philosophy from a phenomenological perspective. It provides a bridge between Western and Eastern philosophy through in-depth discussion of concepts and doctrines of phenomenology and ancient and contemporary Chinese philosophy. Phenomenological readings of Daoist and Buddhist philosophies are provided: the reader will find a study of theoretical and methodological issues and innovative readings of traditional Chinese and Indian philosophies from the phenomenological perspective. The author uses a descriptive rigor to avoid cultural prejudices and provides a non-Eurocentric conception and practice of philosophy. Through this East-West comparative study, a compelling criticism of a Eurocentric conception of philosophy emerges. New concepts and methods in intercultural philosophy are proposed through these chapters. Researchers, teachers, post-graduates and students of philosophy will all find this work intriguing, and those with an interest in non-Western philosophy or phenomenology will find it particularly engaging.

Border-crossing

The history of phenomenology can be understood essentially as a history of border-crossing: disciplinary, geographical, linguistic, and cultural. Only by crossing borders can we be aware that there is always a beyond of what we have hitherto experienced, thought, and understood. Doing phenomenology is nothing other than daring to experience the un-experienced and thinking the un-thought by way of a constant movement of border-crossing, as Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty and other contemporary phenomenologists have shown. The essays collected in this volume are issued from part of the papers presented to the 4th International Conference of P. E. A. CE (Phenomenology for East-Asian CirclE) entitled “Border-Crossing”. They are the collective effort of East-Asian phenomenologists from Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, with the support of their American and European colleagues, to continue this centenary philosophical movement of border-crossing.

This book presents new results of phenomenological research into the philosophical problems of „Identity and Alterity.“ Its contributions continue and enrich the discussion about these central topics by placing them in a broader intercultural context. It deals both with questions about cultural tradition in general and about specific traditions, especially in East Asia. It also reflects differences between the „Western“ style of the phenomenological tradition and cultural traditions of thinking the other and the alien established in East Asia. This publication brings together papers that were presented in the first PEACE (Phenomenology for East-Asian Circle) International Conference, which was held in May 2004 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Phenomenological philosophers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan, who share a cultural heritage, as well as scholars from Europe and the USA, discussed the problems of „Identity and Alterity.“
