Quevedos Sueños, einer der bekanntesten Texte des spanischen Barock, konnten lange nur in zu verschiedenen Zeiten angefertigten Abschriften und in Raubdrucken kursieren, die sich der Kontrolle ihres Autors entzogen. Sie sind aus Rücksicht auf die kirchliche Zensur und auf die geltenden stilistischen Normen vielfältig verfremdet worden, die letzte, als einzige autorisierte Fassung von 1631 wurde noch einmal von fremder Hand expurgiert. In dieser entstellten Fassung wurden die Sueños bis in die zwanziger Jahre des vorigen Jahr hun - derts überliefert. Auch nach den editorischen Bemühungen der letzten vierzig Jahre ist eine verlässliche philologische Rekonstruktion des Werks bis heute ein Desiderat. Ein entsprechender Versuch wird hier für das letzte und reifste Stück des Zyklus, den Sueño de la muerte, vorgelegt und in einer ausführlichen Einleitung begründet. Zwei in den letzten Jahren aufge - tauchte vollständige Handschriften des Sueño aus Quevedos Lebenszeit sind erstmals berücksichtigt.
