'Photographien führen wir nicht' – das war der Satz, den Erich Stenger oft zu hören bekam, als er 1906 begann, eine Sammlung aufzubauen, die gegen Ende seines Lebens zu den größten Europas zählte. Ungewöhnlich ist nicht nur, dass jemand zu einer Zeit begann, Fotografien zu sammeln, als das noch kaum jemand tat, ungewöhnlich ist auch die Vielfalt der Sammlung. Der Fotochemiker Stenger sammelte enzyklopädisch: von der Architektur- zur Zauberfotografie, fotografische Fachliteratur, Schmuck mit eingefassten Fotografien, Karikaturen oder aufwändig gestaltete Ehrenurkunden. Welche Idee dahinter stand und was es bedeutete, damals Fotografie zu sammeln, lassen seine 1945 verfassten Lebenserinnerungen erkennen, die nun mit Kommentaren versehen erstmals veröffentlicht werden. Erich Stenger wollte mit seiner Sammlung ein Museum der Fotografie errichten. Sein Vorhaben wird in der Ausstellung Das Museum der Fotografie. Eine Revision im Museum Ludwig Köln vorgestellt.
