      Prostaglandins and Inflammation

      Conference, London, 1979

Since the proposal of prostaglandins as mediators of inflammation eight years ago, numerous arachidonic acid metabolites have been discovered, including thromboxanes, prostacyclin, prostaglandin endoperoxides, and lipoxygenase products like SRS-A. These metabolites have demonstrated significant biological activities in inflammatory responses and other physiological processes. The surge in research indicates the field's importance, necessitating an evaluation of the roles of prostaglandins and arachidonate pathway products, collectively known as eicosanoids. To address this, a conference was organized to gather experts and critically assess the functions of various eicosanoids in inflammation and the action of anti-inflammatory drugs that modulate these responses. The event, held at King's College Hospital Medical School, fostered lively discussions and led to several important conclusions, despite the complexities that remain to be explored. The organizers expressed gratitude for the facilities at Normanby College and King's College Hospital, as well as for the generous sponsorship from Boots Company Ltd. and the valuable secretarial assistance provided by Mrs. P. Carter.
