1791 erhält der Brite George Vancouver von der Royal Navy den Auftrag zum Nootka-Sund zu reisen, einem Meeresfjord der kanadischen Provinz British Columbia, sich gegen die Spanier durchzusetzen und diesen in Besitz Großbritanniens zu nehmen. Er soll außerdem nach einer Nordwestpassage Ausschau halten und dabei die gesamte pazifische Westküste Kanadas kartografieren. Am 1. April sticht Vancouver auf der HMS Discovery in Begleitung von der HMS Chatham in See, doch bis er sein eigentliches Ziel erreicht, bereist er die halbe Welt. Zunächst gelangt die Expedition zum Kap der Guten Hoffnung, dann segeln sie weiter nach Neuseeland und zur Südküste Australiens, wo Vancouver den King George Sund kartografiert. Schließlich überwintern sie auf Hawaii bis sie ein Jahr später endlich die Westküste Nordamerikas erreichen. Er erkundet die komplette Westküste bis zum 65. Breitengrad eine Nordwestpassage gibt es hier nicht und umfährt Vancouver Island. Schließlich läuft er im August Nootka-Sund an, um die britischen Ansprüche geltend zu machen. Zu einer Einigung mit den Spaniern kommt es allerdings nicht und so kehrt Vancouver wieder zurück nach Hawaii, wo die Verhandlungen mit Kamehameha I. für die Briten deutlich erfolgreicher verlaufen
