Obwohl der Urheber, der Humanist und spätere anglikanische Bischof John Earle, zunächst unbekannt blieb, erwies sich die in den Folgejahren maßgeblich erweiterte, bis 1732 mehrmals nachgedruckte Publikation als ein sensationeller Erfolg. Warum sie von Shakespeares Zeitgenossen mit Begeisterung aufgenommen wurde und mit ihrer pointierten Schilderung alltäglicher Verhaltensweisen noch heute Gültigkeit beanspruchen darf, ist nun – mit einem Vorwort und erläuternden Kommentaren versehen – zum ersten Mal in deutscher Sprache nachzulesen.
