This study of the ethnology of law in a frontier society, analyzes the evolution of institutions of conflict management, their effectiveness in limiting violence, and relationship to changing demographic and social conditions in the gold rushes of Alaska and Yukon in the nineteenth century. Topics covered include the miners' meeting, inter-ethnic justice, the North-West Mounted Police, vigilantes, the military in Alaska and the Revenue Cutter Service.
